The maritime sector has the wind in its sails
The maritime sector has the wind in its sails The order portfolio contains work for two to three years: shipyards in the Northern Netherlands and their suppliers have got the wind in their sales. Even despite the fact that low wage countries are steaming ahead. A recent study commissioned by the NOM shows that the sector has a rosy future. The shipyard as the wheelhouse, the suppliers as the engine We are all familiar with MPVs on the motorway. The northern shipyards are building MPVs for the international waterway: multi purpose vessels, ships that can transport a broad range of cargoes, especially in the coasting trade. No shipyard is an island. The twelve northern shipyards work together with a multiplicity of suppliers. Engines, pipes, heating and cooling systems, air conditioning, interiors, electronics and drawing and calculation work: all activities that are bought in. The NOM as a pilot Building a ship involves an interaction between a shipyard and its suppliers. It is a logistics operation in which timing plays a vital role. There is still much to be gained by improving the process and working more efficiently. The NOM has a pilot function: it shows shipyards and suppliers the way to combinations that strengthen the sector as a whole. The NOM also opens up the knowledge possessed by educational institutes and trade associations. More information? Please contact Wytze Rijke at rijke@nom.nl.
